How can we improve technical SEO

We can improve technical SEO by some of the methods. Here is the list of the things that we can do.

  1. By applying SSL
  2. Decreasing the site load time
  3. Eliminating 404s or broken pages and links
  4. Eliminating mixed content issues
  5. Eliminating duplicate content
  6. Denying the toxic backlinks
  7. Creating an XML sitemap and submitting it.

These seven simple steps will definitely improve technical SEO. And by improving the technical SEO we will be able to rank our site higher.

By applying SSL

SSL stands for secure sockets layer which is a security protocol used to establish encrypted links between the web server and the browser in their communication online. Earlier it was used to provide security and personalization in online shopping and registration.

But in July 2020, the google chrome and other search engine rolled out a “not secure” movement. By this movement, any website that does not have a security certificate installed on their websites will be marked as not secure. And the user will know when they are entering a risky environment and thus this will potentially decrease the site’s ranking. The website can remove this not secure tag by installing a security certificate on the website domain and then migrating the website to HTTPS.

Decreasing the site load time

Decreasing the website’s load time is very important. According to the survey, 40% of people have abandoned a website because of its load time. Users are much more likely to abandon the website if it takes more than three seconds to load on mobile phones and two seconds to load on desktop. Google’s ranking factor has load time as a part of it.

Load time is increased because of large images and rich flies. By compressing the large images and optimizing the files we can decrease the load time.

Eliminating 404s or broken pages and links

The 404 error occurs when the link to the page that does not exist. In short, the website is broken. These 404 errors make the user experience terrible. These errors are most likely caused when the URL of the page in which it originally lived has been changed or the page does not exist anymore.

In such a case we should set up a 301 redirect which will bring the visitors to the new page. We can find which page on the website is broken by using a few things like the Linkminer, SEMRush, google search console. Once the broken pages and links have been rectified we should generate the newly updated sitemap and submit it to google.

Eliminating mixed content issues

Mixed content issues are raised when we have recently forced SSL onto our websites. These arise when we have nun secure pages linked with our websites. Identifying these sites can be done by running a site audit in SEMRush. It will show up all the websites now we have to go manually to each page and find its HTTP links and then change them to HTTPS.

Eliminating duplicate content

Duplicacy in the content decreases the Google ranking of the website. Using the SEMRush site audit we can get a list of errors. One we know which content is considered as duplicate we can edit the content on our pages and make sure that the pages are unique.

Denying the toxic backlinks

These toxic backlinks can harm the search ranking and one should get rid of them. We can use tools like screaming frog and google search console to get a record of backlinks to the website plus it also gives us the domain score to help us evaluate the links.

The very first step to refuse links to reach out to the domains manually and to ask them to remove the links to our web page. We should send a reconsideration request too. Upload the list of toxic backlinks to the google disavowal tool. After doing this google will assign a ‘no follow’ tag to them and will no longer affect your search rankings.

Creating an XML sitemap and submitting it

This is to let Google know that we have improved our online presence. Submitting a newly updated file helps google to acknowledge the change much faster.
